Usage Agreement

Institutions must agree to operate an identity management and authentication system (e.g., RADIUS) and they are solely responsible for verifying their users before granting them access to eduroam.

KENET may request authentication logs from the institution strictly for the purposes of troubleshooting, service support, and reporting on eduroam usage. Such logs shall be limited to information necessary to indicate successful and failed authentication attempts and shall be handled in accordance with applicable data protection and privacy regulations.

Why should our institution join?

Joining eduroam provides seamless internet access for students, researchers, and staff when visiting other eduroam-enabled institutions globally. It enhances collaboration, supports mobility, and improves the user experience.

Who can join eduroam in Kenya?

Any accredited research or educational institution in Kenya can join eduroam. This includes universities, research institutes, colleges, TVETs, and other educational establishments.

What are the technical requirements?

  • RADIUS Server: Required for authentication
  • WPA2-Enterprise: Required on your wireless infrastructure
  • Network Configuration: IP management and firewall rules

How do we configure our RADIUS server?

  • Install a RADIUS server (e.g., FreeRADIUS)

Can eduroam work with captive portals?

No, eduroam does not work with captive portals. eduroam requires direct access to the network without any intermediate web-based login pages.

Email account requirements for Kenya

Email accounts used for eduroam authentication MUST end with a .ke domain, such as .ac.ke, .or.ke, .sc.ke, .go.ke, etc.
For non-country-code TLD (non-cTLD) domains such as .edu, .org, or .com, institutions are added to the eduroam infrastructure via NAPTR+SRV DNS records pointing to the KENET RADIUS proxy.

How long does it take to join?

The time frame can vary based on your institution's readiness and existing infrastructure complexity. Typically, it can take a few weeks to a few months to complete the setup and configuration.
